{"id":100,"date":"2020-10-02T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spelling-test.com\/blog\/?p=100"},"modified":"2020-05-16T01:10:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-16T01:10:48","slug":"environmental-support-for-language-learning-comparing-children-and-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spelling-test.com\/blog\/environmental-support-for-language-learning-comparing-children-and-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental support for language learning: comparing children and adults"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I recently stumbled upon an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/cdr\/2012\/602807\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">academic article on how reading books fosters language development around the world<\/a>.&nbsp; In the article the authors list the ideal environment to foster language acquisition in children, or in the words of the authors the ideal \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/cdr\/2012\/602807\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">environmental support for language learning<\/a>\u201d, these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Children need to hear many words often<\/li><li>Children learn words when they are interested<\/li><li>Children learn best when adults are responsive to them<\/li><li>Words are learned when meaning is made clear<\/li><li>Vocabulary and grammar are learned together<\/li><li>Keep it positive<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I found really interesting that this type of environment is actually also the ideal one for an adult language learner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is well known that<a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativityandlanguages.com\/2011\/06\/do-not-forget-the-forgetting-curve-when-learning-a-language-or-anything-else\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">&nbsp;repetition<\/a>&nbsp;is essential to transfer new vocabulary from short to long-term memory (point 1; see also the buzz on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mostlymaths.net\/2011\/05\/anki-and-language-learning-spaced.html\" class=\"aioseop-link\">spaced repetition software<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also well acknowledged that adults learn more and better when they are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linguatrek.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/the-three-ingredients-for-successful-language-learning\" class=\"aioseop-link\">motivated<\/a>&nbsp;and interested in what they hear (point 2; Is any surprise that people seem to learn really well a language when they are in a relationship with a foreign partner?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativityandlanguages.com\/2011\/02\/improv-to-learn-languages-how-i-use-theatre-improvisation-to-learn-german\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">Active learning&nbsp;<\/a>seems to be much more efficient to acquire and retain new information (point 3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of being exposed to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sk.com.br\/sk-krash.html\" class=\"aioseop-link\">comprehensible input\u00a0<\/a>is also widely\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.everydaylanguagelearner.com\/2011\/05\/30\/comprehensible-input\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">discussed by many language bloggers<\/a>\u00a0(point 4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that grammar is acquired while learning the language and not separately from it is also widely discussed and I recently wrote about t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativityandlanguages.com\/2012\/01\/knowing-grammar-without-studying-it-an-emergent-property-of-language-acquisition\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">he process of learning grammar without actually studying it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, many agree with a positive mentality, the belief that learning is achievable and a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluentin3months.com\/starting-to-learn-a-language-with-the-right-attitude\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\">\u201ccan do\u201d attitude&nbsp;<\/a>is very important among adult language learners.
